Fishing across the Cook, Minnesota area continues to be excellent as summer patterns begin to take shape on Lake Vermilion and many of the surrounding Northwoods lakes. Anglers are finding success targeting walleyes, crappies, bass, muskies, and even trout as fish settle into their seasonal locations. Whether you're planning a trip to Lake Vermilion, Pelican Lake, Myrtle Lake, Echo Lake, or one of the many hidden gems around Cook, Northwest Bait & Tackle has the latest fishing report and the bait you need to stay on the bite.

Lake Vermilion Walleye Report

Walleye fishing remains productive on Lake Vermilion, with fish continuing to hold on mid-lake rock humps and extending reefs in 5 to 15 feet of water. Anglers are finding consistent action using slip bobbers tipped with lively leeches. These shallow structure areas are especially productive during the early morning and evening hours when walleyes move up to feed.

During the middle of the day, many fish are transitioning deeper, with the best daytime bite occurring in the 20- to 25-foot range. Anglers pulling Lindy rigs along in the sand typically along the breaklines in 10 to 20 feet of water are reporting good success. Leeches, nightcrawlers, and minnows continue to be effective bait choices when working these breaklines.

Crappie and Bluegill Fishing

Panfish action remains strong throughout the Cook area. Crappies and bluegills are being caught shallow around bullrushes, cabbage weeds, and emerging weed beds in 2 to 10 feet of water. A slip bobber paired with a crawler, leech, or crappie minnow continues to be one of the most productive presentations.

Many anglers are finding fish scattered throughout the weed cover, so moving around and covering water can help locate active schools. The shallow bite remains particularly good during the morning and evening periods.

Bass Fishing Update

Largemouth bass fishing continues to be excellent across area lakes. Fish are holding in similar locations as the panfish, utilizing cabbage beds, bullrushes, and shallow weed edges. Spinnerbaits, wacky-rigged soft plastics, and square-bill crankbaits are all producing quality fish.

Smallmouth bass remain active on shallow rock piles and shoreline structure, although many fish are beginning their gradual move toward deeper summer patterns. Focus on rocky shorelines, reefs, and rock transitions in 3 to 12 feet of water. The same presentations that are producing largemouth bass are also working well for smallmouth.

Pelican Lake Fishing Report

Pelican Lake continues to provide consistent fishing opportunities. Bass anglers are seeing fish transition toward deeper weed edges and offshore rock piles as water temperatures continue to warm.

Crappie fishing remains one of the highlights on Pelican. Fish can be found in a variety of depths, ranging from shallow spawning areas in 2 to 4 feet of water to deeper weed edges and transitions in 6 to 8 feet. Anglers willing to adjust depths throughout the day are finding the most success.

Myrtle Lake and Echo Lake Crappies

Myrtle Lake and Echo Lake are both producing quality crappie action. Fish are beginning to concentrate on deeper transitions and breaklines in 8 to 12 feet of water. Small crappie minnows under a slip bobber continue to be a reliable presentation, especially during low-light periods.

Trout Fishing on Erskine and Jammer Lakes

Anglers targeting trout are still finding success on Erskine Lake and Jammer Lake. Erskine continues to produce some quality rainbow trout, while Jammer Lake is providing good numbers of fish.

For trout, small spoons and inline spinners remain top producers. Nightcrawlers suspended under a bobber are also accounting for plenty of catches, making this a great option for families and anglers looking for steady action.

Musky Fishing Heating Up

Musky fishing has been strong recently, with many anglers reporting success during evening and nighttime hours. Mid-lake humps and deeper cabbage weed beds have been the most productive areas. As water temperatures stabilize, fish are becoming increasingly active, especially after sunset.

Large bucktails, topwater baits, and rubber presentations are all producing follows and strikes. Anglers putting in time after dark are seeing some of the best opportunities for trophy fish.
