Northern Minnesota Ice Fishing Update – Northwoods Bait & Tackle Cook, MN,
March 20, 2026
Fishing action around the lakes in the Cook and Ely area is typical for early spring in the area lakes. Focus on water depth, structures, and the right bait.
This time of year, always check weather, ice depth and lake conditions, and current fishing seasons before heading out. Conditions can change quickly putting you at risk if you aren't prepared.
Walleye and Pike season is closed for now, but there is plenty of fishing to be had. Lake Trout are biting and the season is open for another week or so until March 31. We have all the gear you need for success.
For trout anglers, Burntside Lake has been producing lake trout at a variety of depths, but the most consistent action has been 15–50 feet near humps and major reef complexes. We carry proven lake trout gear including baked in options, JB Lures tubes and bucktails and Bay de Noc Laker Takers.
Stop in the shop to stock up—we’ve got great fish-calling options like Northland Buckshot Spoons, Rapala Rippin’ Raps, light-up lures, Dirty Bombs, and Lake Lighters.
New for Minnesota starting February 23, 2026 is a new year round catch-and-release season for largemouth and smallmouth bass on inland waters. Harvest of these species is still restricted during certain periods. For more information check out pages 13-14 of the 2026 Minnesota Fishing Regulations.
